What was the Blitz?
The Blitz is the bombing on London by German forces. This occured from the 7th of Septemeber 1940 to the 11th of May 1941. Germany would bomb London during the day or night and when the sirens went off that a bomb was about to be dropped, residents sought shelter where ever they could find it. Many would flee to the underground stations and some even dug 'holes' in their backyards which were basicall holes with corigated iron over the top then covered in dirt which lead to a staircase into a small room. If you were in one of these shelters and a bomb hit your house then you would not be harmed. At night the underground stations would be home to 177,000 people. After, the bombings' fire consumed most of the city. The worst raid was on a school being used as an air shelter and this resulted in 450 civilians being killed.
